What is CAL 133?

California Technical Bulletin 133, abbreviated CAL 133 or TB 133, is a standard that tests seating furniture for public occupancy buildings containing 10 or more pieces of furniture. Such facilities might include nursing homes, healthcare facilities, hotels, auditoriums, and prisons. The requirements help in the containment of flame spread through the use of specialty foams, fabric backers, and fire blocker layers. Even though it was conceived in the state of California, CAL133 is also applied to some cities and states that are adopting the criteria as well.

In California, CAL133 is voluntary in fully sprinklered facilities that are in accordance with NFPA 13-1987 or UBC Standard No. 38-1, 1988. However, in California, even in sprinklered areas, seating must comply with CAL 117, which is the minimum testing requirement for fabrics and components. Despite this, it may still be required to relieve a party from any liability in a product's lawsuit.

The scope and testing procedures of the 1991 edition can be found here. Also, read this in depth article for more information regarding CAL133.
